Crazy House

A building shaped like a giant tree stump with spiralling walkways — and still a working hotel.

The architect Dang Viet Nga designed this and began building in 1990, not from conventional drawings but by moulding concrete onto a steel frame, so the form resembles a giant tree stump that has grown up and then crawled off in several directions. Inside are narrow spiralling corridors, railless staircases running outdoors, caves, concrete spiderwebs, and bedrooms named after animals — the Bear room, the Kangaroo room, the Eagle room. It is still a hotel taking guests, which means that by day you tour the very rooms somebody sleeps in that night.
