Po Nagar Towers

Po Nagar Towers — Khanh Hoa

Ms Sarah Welch · CC0

A Cham tower complex on Cu Lao hill above the Cai river, honouring the mother goddess Po Nagar.

Po Nagar stands on Cu Lao hill above the mouth of the Cai river, built and extended from the 8th to the 13th century — across many successive Cham reigns. The north-east tower is the largest survivor at about twenty-three metres, holding a stone statue of the goddess Po Nagar above a yoni base. She is the mother of the land for the Cham, who taught rice growing and weaving; Vietnamese settlers took her up as Thien Y A Na. Because of that, this is one of the few Cham sites where ritual has never stopped: in the third lunar month the Thap Ba festival draws tens of thousands, and Cham and Vietnamese offer incense to the same goddess.
