Nha Trang Cathedral

A grey stone gothic cathedral on a rock outcrop, built from the hill it stands on.

People call it the Mountain Church because it stands on a high rock outcrop in the middle of the city, and it was built accordingly: to make a level site they cut away part of the hill, then used the stone they had removed to build the church. It was finished in the early 1930s in French gothic style, with pointed arches and stained glass, but the whole exterior is left bare grey stone rather than rendered — which makes it read heavier and plainer than other churches of its period. The front wall is covered in small stone plaques inscribed with the names of the dead. From the forecourt you look down on Nha Trang station and the roofs of the city.
