The modernist palace where the Vietnam War ended at 11:30am on 30 April 1975.
Independence Palace is one of the few buildings where the architecture and the history are equally worth the visit. Ngo Viet Thu designed it in a modernist idiom but laid it out on Chinese characters and East Asian geomancy, with a concrete brise-soleil that shades the facade and doubles as ornament. Inside, the 1960s interiors survive: the reception hall, the cabinet room, and in the basement a command bunker with its operations maps and radio sets still in place. On 30 April 1975 a tank crashed through the main gate and the Vietnam War ended in the forecourt — two tanks stand on that lawn today.
