Over 250km of tunnels dug by hand into red earth — an underground town in wartime.
Cu Chi is not one tunnel but a network of hundreds of kilometres, dug with hoes and bamboo baskets over years, on three levels reaching more than ten metres down. Below ground were smokeless kitchens venting through long pipes, clinics, meeting rooms, arms stores and wells — a town running entirely underground. The entrances are unbelievably small, hidden under dry leaves, and visitors are often startled when a guide vanishes into one in two seconds. A short stretch has been widened so people can crawl through; a few dozen metres in the dark is enough to understand why the place makes such an impression.
