Tao Dan is District 1's lung: old broad-crowned trees, shaded paths, and a replica Cham temple complex set among the gardens. But the thing worth waking for is the bird café in one corner — from about five in the morning, bird keepers arrive and hang their cages across the frames, then sit over filter coffee listening to the birds compete. At the same hour the rest of the park fills with groups doing exercises, playing shuttlecock, practising tai chi. By seven it has all dissolved and Tao Dan goes back to being an ordinary park.
