Cho Lon's wholesale market, Chinese tiled roofs around a courtyard with a clock tower.
Binh Tay is the largest market in Cho Lon and a genuine wholesale operation — goods from here go all over southern Vietnam and across into Cambodia. A Chinese merchant paid to build it in the 1920s, and the architecture is unusual: curved yin-yang Chinese roof tiles set on a French concrete frame, four ranges enclosing a courtyard with a clock tower and a statue of the founder. Walking the market means walking between bales stacked over head height, through the smell of Chinese medicine, dried shrimp and sandalwood incense. Very few visitors buy anything here, but that is not the reason to come.
