Saigon Central Post Office — Ho Chi Minh City

A French-era post office with a steel vault, hand-painted maps, and still open for business.

This is a real post office — it still takes letters and sells stamps — not a museum. But stepping inside is hard to believe: a curved steel vault runs the length of the hall in the manner of a late nineteenth-century European railway station, patterned tiles underfoot, wooden telephone booths down each side, and on the wall two hand-painted maps from 1892 — one of the telegraph lines of Cochinchina, one of Saigon and its surroundings. For years an elderly letter-writer worked from a corner of the hall, composing letters for customers in French and English.
