Big airy puffs that are hollow inside, with a crackling shell coated in malt syrup and fragrant toasted sesame — a traditional sweet of Sóc Trăng's Chinese community.
Mè láo is a time-honored specialty of the ethnic Chinese community in Sóc Trăng, often seen during Tết and festival seasons. The core is made from dried taro that is deep-fried until it puffs up hollow, then glazed with malt syrup and rolled in sesame. Bite into one and it is crisp and light, delicately sweet, dissolving instantly on the tongue — the playful name "láo" hints at how it looks big yet is empty within.
Flavour: Crisp and airy, delicately sweet
