Da Nang Cathedral

Da Nang Cathedral — Da Nang

A pink Gothic church in the middle of town, known to everyone in Da Nang as the Rooster Church.

Nobody in Da Nang calls this place by its official name. A metal rooster sits on the bell tower as lightning rod and weathervane, and that settled it: the Rooster Church. A French priest began the building in the early 1920s — powder-pink walls, stained glass telling scenes from scripture, a pointed spire rising over low shophouses. Behind the church is a grotto to Our Lady modelled on Lourdes. Late in the afternoon the sun comes through the coloured glass and lays red and blue bands across the tiled floor; that is the hour to go in.
