Five marble hills named for the five elements, hollowed inside into Buddhist grotto shrines.

Five limestone-marble hills rise from the coastal plain of Da Nang, named for the five elements. Thuy Son is the largest and the only one open to climb: stone steps lead to Tam Thai Pagoda and a river viewpoint, then down into Huyen Khong cave — a great chamber with a natural opening in the roof through which sunlight falls straight onto the Buddha, incense drifting up through the shaft of light in the image most visitors remember of Da Nang. At the foot of the hills is the Non Nuoc stone-carving village, where chisels ring all day, though the stone is now imported so that these five hills can be left alone.

Did you know

The five hills are named Kim Son, Moc Son, Thuy Son, Hoa Son and Tho Son.
Thuy Son is the largest, holding Tam Thai Pagoda and Huyen Khong cave.
Huyen Khong cave has a natural roof opening that lets sunlight fall inside.
The Non Nuoc stone-carving village lies at the foot of the hills.
A lift serves Thuy Son for those who would rather not take the steps.

Travel tips

Come early: the shaft of light in Huyen Khong is best around 10–11am.
Take the lift up if you like, but walk down to cover all the caves.
