A centuries-old stone-carving village under the Marble Mountains, chisels ringing the length of the street.
Walking through Non Nuoc means walking between two ranks of stone figures: Buddhas, lions, young women, mortars, bangles — some taller than you, some the size of a fist, spilling over onto the pavement. Stone carving here goes back centuries, beginning with marble quarried straight out of the Marble Mountains and passed down through the village's families. The mountains are protected now, so the stone comes in from elsewhere, but the method has barely changed: chiselled, ground and polished by hand. You can step into any workshop and watch; they are used to visitors and do not mind.
