Son Tra is a rarity: an intact block of primary forest immediately beside a city of over a million people. The peninsula road clings to the slope, cliff on one side and deep blue sea on the other, opening now and then onto Bai But, Bai Rang or Nghe cape. A few hundred red-shanked douc langurs live in the forest — the primate called the queen of the species for its five-coloured coat — and if you go early enough they often feed in the trees right by the road. On the ridge stands a thousand-year-old banyan whose aerial roots form a forest of columns, and Linh Ung Pagoda with a 67-metre Guanyin looking out over Da Nang bay.

Travel tips
