Ba Ra Mountain

The third-highest peak in southern Vietnam, standing alone above the red earth of Phuoc Long.

Ba Ra rises from the flat basalt-red country of Phuoc Long, over seven hundred metres and almost entirely on its own, so the view from the top runs a very long way — which made it strategic ground through two wars. The S'tieng call it Bonom Brah, the sacred mountain. You can ride the cable car or climb more than a thousand stone steps through forest, past the Ba shrine and caves that once sheltered soldiers. At the summit the wind is constant and Thac Mo lake opens below like a green mirror laid among rubber plantations.

Did you know

The mountain is about 723m high, among the tallest in south-eastern Vietnam.
The S'tieng call it Bonom Brah, meaning sacred mountain.
Both a cable car and a stone stairway of over 1,000 steps reach the summit.
The summit overlooks Thac Mo lake and the rubber country of Phuoc Long.

Travel tips

If climbing, start before 7am — the upper steps have little shade.
Add Thac Mo lake at the foot of the mountain for an afternoon boat ride.
