Banh It Towers

Banh It Towers — Binh Dinh

Ms Sarah Welch · CC0

An ancient cluster of Cham towers atop a hill, one of the most beautiful and best-preserved tower complexes in Binh Dinh.

Banh It Towers stand tall on a hill overlooking the Con River, a complex of four Cham towers built from the late 11th to early 12th century. From afar, the cluster evokes the humble 'banh it la gai' rice cakes of the Nau land, hence the name. Each tower has its own form: the sturdy Gate Tower, the graceful Stele Tower, the Saddle Tower with its uniquely curved roof, and the majestic Main Tower nearly twenty meters high. Reliefs of the dancing god Shiva and intricate patterns are carved into the russet fired brick, telling the story of a once-brilliant Champa kingdom. Standing among the towers in the field breeze, you seem to hear the echo of ancient Cham drums.
