Mangrove forest right beside the city, where tens of thousands of waterbirds nest each rainy season.
Few cities put a working rookery a few kilometres from downtown. The Bac Lieu sanctuary is a surviving patch of coastal mangrove where egrets, night herons, grey herons, cormorants and other waterbirds arrive to nest as soon as the rains begin. Trails and wooden walkways run beneath date palm and mangrove canopy; look up and the crowns are dense with nests. The best hour is dusk, when the whole flock returns at once and birdsong drowns out everything else.
