A white French villa on Big Mountain, once the gilded prison of Emperor Thanh Thai.
The French built Villa Blanche in the late 19th century on the site of the old Phuoc Thang fort, as a retreat for the Governor-General of Indochina. Three storeys painted white, its facade set with ceramic reliefs of Greek myth, it stands among frangipani and old almond trees looking straight out at Front Beach. Its history is heavier than its looks: Emperor Thanh Thai was held here under house arrest for nearly a decade before being exiled to Réunion. Inside is a collection of ceramics salvaged from wrecks off Vung Tau, and the first-floor balcony frames the whole bay.
