Udo Island

Udo Island — Jeju

Liszt uhm · CC BY-SA 3.0

A small island shaped like a lying cow, easy to circle by bike in half a day.

The ferry from Seongsan takes fifteen minutes. Udo is small enough that its ring road is only about seventeen kilometres, and the best way round is a rented electric bike with stops wherever you feel like. Seobinbaeksa beach is startlingly white because the sand is crushed coral rather than ordinary grain, the water tropical turquoise. Across the island, black stone walls stacked without mortar shield fields of peanuts and carrots. The local speciality is peanut ice cream — rich, nutty, sold at every roadside stand.
