Thousands of vertical hexagonal stone columns by the sea, formed as lava cooled.

When Hallasan's lava reached here and met the sea it cooled abruptly and cracked vertically into even columns, most of them six-sided — the geological effect textbooks usually illustrate with photographs of Ireland, and which Jeju has to hand. The cliff stands about twenty metres and runs nearly a kilometre along the Daepo shore, with the swell throwing spray up the base of the columns. A wooden deck follows the cliff edge, so there is no scrambling; on rough days the waves stand up, and on calm ones you can count the faces of the columns through clear water.
