Seaweed rice rolls with egg, carrot and pickled radish — every family's packed lunch.

Gimbap belongs to day trips: mothers rise early, roll a stack and cut them into a box. The rice is seasoned with sesame oil and salt rather than vinegar, and the filling changes from house to house — fish cake, stir-fried beef, rolled egg, spinach, yellow pickled radish. Gimbap shops open all day and are the cheapest quick meal in Korea.
