Jangtaesan Metasequoia Forest

Thousands of metasequoias planted in rows, with a walkway suspended fourteen metres up in the canopy.

The metasequoia was believed extinct until a few survivors were found in China in 1941 — so every metasequoia forest in the world is planted, and the one at Jangtaesan dates from the 1970s. The trees grow dead straight with conical crowns and were set in rows, so walking in feels like entering a hall of columns. What makes this one different is the skyway: a walkway nearly six hundred metres long hung fourteen metres up, level with the middle of the canopy, so you walk among the leaves rather than beneath them. In autumn the needles turn rust red and drop, leaving a forest of grey columns.

Did you know

The metasequoia stand was planted from the 1970s across about 80 hectares.
The elevated walkway runs about 600m at a height of 14m in the canopy.
